We don’t like to discuss our lawn. It’s gotten to be a sore topic for us over these past few years after several failed attempts at getting it to thrive in a sandy-soil invironment.
You see, we used to live on a small half-acre property. When we moved into that home the front lawn was a mess, so we cleared a few dying trees and had a sod lawn installed. Our grass was lush, the best front yard on the block. We watered it every evening using a simple lawn sprinkler.
Then we moved to our current property which is on over three acres of space. At first, the lawn wasn’t so bad. Even though it wasn’t watered regularly, it held up fairly well for a while.
Since we didn’t have a sprinkler system in place, the summer sun scorched it. We realized that without water, our lawn would never grow to its full potential. So we stopped fertilizing and let it go.
We’d really love to see Emma play outside on a carpet-like layer of grass instead of the hard prickly weeds and crabgrass that cover the ground currently. In order to achieve this, we have decided to install a costly sprinkler system. It will be worth it, but that’s not all we have to do.
The other key ingredient? Fertilizer. This time we’re using Scotts Turf Builder, for these reasons.
- It is Kid and Pet Friendly – I don’t need another thing to worry about.
- Strengthens the lawn and protects against the things that can sabotage a lawn like weeds, heat, drought and activity.
- Can be applied any season to any type of grass.
- Contains no filler
- Is formulated with slow-release Nitrogen and will not burn.
Scott’s Turf Builder Fertilizer comes in two sizes – 5,000 square feet bags and 15,000 square feet bags and is available at Home Depot, Target and Walmart.

Pictures!! We’ve dreamed of a lawn but are in WAY too hilly/shaded of an area. And actually, I’m so glad I don’t hear lawn mowers going off all weekend long :)
