When Ryan was a few months old, we attended a pool party. I connected with one of the other moms there; she was there by herself with her two girls, one around three years old and the other I’d guess about six months old. She had her hands full attending a party solo with the girls, but I noticed how enamored her youngest one was with this giraffe toy she was holding. It really kept her occupied as she chomped on this thing that looked to me a lot like a dog’s chew toy. And she had definitely been working on it a lot because the paint was wearing off.
It looked cute enough, so when I got home I looked it up. It was apparently the hottest toy around, and I felt so out of the loop having heard nothing of it before. As a blogger, I’m used to hearing about new products sometimes before they even hit the shelves. When I finally found the product online, my jaw dropped. This chew toy was twenty five dollars? Say what?!
There was no way, no how I was spending that much on a teether. Yes, I know it’s adorable. And as I discovered by reading this Yahoo article, it’s made in France instead of China. That’s all good and well, but I can think of a few other alternatives to an overpriced piece of rubber. Like a cookie, for one.
I know that celebrity endorsements help promote these kinds of products, and this is a celebrity-obsessed country we live in. Which I believe is the reason many Americans are in suffocating debt situations. We have to have the latest this and that because so-and-so has it, but it’s at a cost. And I think it’s silly to spend $25 on a rubber chew toy. But that’s just my opinion.
What are your thoughts on Sophie the Giraffe?

This is such an expensive chew toy, it’s a little insane to be honest!
I’ve heard of Sophie the Giraffe quite a few times, however I have to admit I had no idea it cost so much! Crazy.
I have heard of Sophie the giraffe it’s very trendy to have Sophie the giraffe. But it is extremely expensive and unfortunately at that age I know full well that my kids would have lost it as many times as we bought it. It’s too much for me I don’t think I can justify $25 for a teaser it would have to be under 20. 25 is just too high a price point.
We had one when my son was little. I think it might be a little expensive, but when you figure about how much they use it, it is worth every penny!
I have never heard of Sophie Giraffe, but it’s a great idea.
I first heard about this when I did daycare and the parent was frantic because their child did not come home from daycare with this giraffe. I thought they were crazy to get so nuts over this toy. But then I found out how expensive it was. What a crazy idea but I’ve seen them everywhere.
I agree with you that this is a lot of money for a chew toy. I find that a lot of these toys that are pushed by celebrities are fads.
I purchased one for the little boy that I run for and he loves it. I am one that quality beats the cost any day, especially when it comes to the safety of our children.
$25 for a teething toy is INSANE! I think we need a reality check in this country, for sure.
I first heard about it 2 years ago and thought the price was ridiculous then, and still think it’s ridiculous now. $25 for a teether is insane, no matter how cute it is!
