I don’t care who you are, or how old you are. You can be bold and brave in so many ways, but we all have some fears, whether they are rational or irrational. It’s a normal part of being human. Last week we took my daughter’s friend to a local theme park with us, and the two kept waffling back and forth about whether to go on a particular ride, one that I had reservations about even allowing them to go on. As a parent I try not to transfer my fears onto my children. There is enough to worry about in this world, and I don’t want to raise them to be fearful.
Eventually the two decided to go for it and we nervously watched from the ground. After the fourth time going on this sky-high swing ride, the girls begged me to go for a ride with them. The answer was no. And then one prodded, “But we got over our fear and we’re just kids. Why can’t you do the same?” I walked right into that one; they’re just kids but they are also smart. So on I went on this ride and about 10 seconds in I regretted it, but sometimes you have to put your money where your mouth is.
As you may have read here before, we are huge fans of children’s book author Mo Willems. His latest creation Sam, the Most Scaredy-cat Kid in the Whole World is in stores now. It is a sequel to Leonardo, the Terrible Monster. As we were unfamiliar with the first in the series which was released back in 2005, we read that one first.
My son was delighted to read the book right along with a stuffed version of Leonardo, who also happens to be a cool puppet! Leonardo is a monster who wants very badly to be scary, but he just isn’t. He finds the most scaredy cat kid to try and scare, and it still doesn’t work. In the end, the two become friends.
In Sam, the Most Scaredy-cat Kid in the Whole World, Sam meets Kerry who is the second most scaredy-cat kid. And guess what? The two kids are afraid of one another! My kids both have their fears, and through these two books they are learning that when they step out of the comfort zone, BIG life-changing things can happen! And that’s exactly what I want them to do in life.
We read a lot of books and I love the look of these. They drawings are adorable and I’m sure my kids would love them.
I’ve not heard of Mo Willem’s before but how awesome do those books look and they sound like they would be such fun to read.
My grandchildren love reading books. This look like they would want to read them over and over especially in their own private reading space.
I never read these books but they look so adorable. My kids love story time so I will look into getting these titles.
Mo Williems is one of my daughters favorite authors. She loves the pigeon books! Even though she’s 12, she will still grab one at the library and read it as she goes along.
I haven’t read these books and I’d love to have them for my grandkids. Thankfully, they all love to read and I’m always looking for great books.
This is my kiddos favorite author! This author is a very creative guy and he keeps my kiddos imagination going. I can’t wait to see these new books.
These sound and look like some fabulous books! I just love the illustrations. That sky high swing looks frightening! I couldn’t do it, but my daughter would.
These sound like great books that teach an important lesson. My son would love these books! Adding to Christmas list.
Those sound like great books for kids. I am sure my younger nieces and nephews would absolutely love these.
