I love making my own gravy. When I make my basic tomato sauce recipe I always use Tuttorosso canned tomatoes. They are very reasonable in price and high in quality and I love to make big batches when time allows and then I freeze containers to make for an easy dinner time, especial for weeknights.
Tuttorosso is based in the Midwest and grown by Red Gold, which is third generation family-owned and family-run. The tomatoes are carefully grown in Indiana, Michigan and Ohio, where the climate and soil are perfect for tomatoes. I don’t have fresh tomatoes to use for my gravy, but this is the next best thing.
I decided to give this Tuttorosso recipe a try and I was pleasantly surprised. I modified the recipe a little bit, using the entire 6 oz can of tomato paste and adding 1/2 cup water. I don’t typically add sugar to my sauce, but we do like pizza sauce more on the sweet side so that’s what I’ll be using this on.
Perfect Marinara Sauce
Ingredients:
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
3 garlic cloves, peeled
1 tablespoon Tuttorosso® Tomato Paste
1 (28 ounce) can Tuttorosso® Peeled Plum Italian Style Tomatoes with natural basil flavor, crushed with hands
1/4 teaspoon sugar
5 whole basil leaves
Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions:
Heat oil in skillet. Add garlic and cook over medium heat until golden brown, about 5 minutes. Add the tomato paste and cook, stirring for 1 minute.
Add the peeled plum tomatoes with natural basil flavor, sugar and basil. Stir to combine and then add salt and black pepper and bring to a boil.
Simmer sauce over low heat, stirring occasionally until thickened and reduced, about 30 minutes. Taste and season again with salt and black pepper if needed. Discard basil and garlic cloves.
Serve over your favorite pasta. Top with fresh torn basil leaves and grated fresh Parmesan cheese.

I make an amazing stew that was my grandma’s recipe. It calls for fresh tomatoes – but I love how easy canned tomatoes are!

If I won, I’d use the tomatoes for my home-made Chili with Black Beans recipe. We enjoy the chili topped with cheese and a few days later use any leftovers for nachos!
