Thanks to Grounds for Sculpture for hosting us.
The kids both had off for Veterans Day last Friday, and the weather was beautiful, so we knew we had to do something outside to take advantage of this short-lived warmth. The Grounds for Sculpture is one of my favorite places to visit, but it’s been such a long time since I’d been there. I showed the kids some photos of the grounds that I’d found online to give them a preview and they were just as excited as I was to get there.
At the Grounds for Sculpture, you’ll find a unique blend of mixed media sculpture and beautiful grounds. It’s like hiking through a lush museum, complete with hidden trails to explore.
There are buildings that house artwork inside, but the outdoor exhibits have always been my favorite part, and fall is the perfect time to visit with all of the beautiful changing leaves. As it turns out, it’s still pretty warm outside.
The kids got a kick out of the many realistic-looking mannequins dispersed about, many plucked right out of famous impressionist paintings. They enjoyed being a part of the art. We saw a few kids doing the mannequin challenge, too. We also saw some beautiful peacocks trotting around.
The kids’ favorite part was rolling down this hill. Sometimes you’ve just gotta stop drop and roll! They were hilarious, and it gave mom and dad a short break from walking.
One of my favorite areas of the grounds is the scenery around Rats, the onsite restaurant. I have admired this vantage point for many years but have yet to dine there. It’s on my list for sure. Toward the tail end of our visit, the kids found painted rocks that people had left there to be found.
The Grounds for Sculpture is a wonderful place to visit for couples, families, students – anyone really! Tickets are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for students 6-17 and parking is free. Discounts are available if you purchase online. As you can see in the photos above, it’s a scenic place for photography and portraits. My photos were all shot on my iPhone 6.
