Homemade Carpet Cleaning Solution

Last year I purchased a Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet Pro so that we could both spot and deep clean our carpets. Before that we had a spot bot but we decided it was time to upgrade to something more serious. With two cats and a large dog this purchase was long overdue. The cats can have problems digesting food and as you can imagine spills – and a lot of pet hair – happen often around here so this machine sees a lot of daily use. This thing means business; It works really well and is super easy to clean.

The only problem was that I was getting tired of paying so much for the cleaning solution that Bissell sells. It’s not cheap – and in my opinion this homemade cleaning version works much better than theirs.

It’s a good idea to make and store a big batch of this solution so that you have it on hand. You never know when you’re going to have a big mess to clean and you’ll be thankful to not have a chemistry project to do before tackling it. So do yourself a favor and designate a large jug for this solution.

Homemade Carpet Cleaning Solution

You will need:
1/2 cup bleach-free laundry detergent
1 cup ammonia
1 gallon water

Shake well before using, and rinse with plain water after cleaning if desired. This solution has not only saved me so much money, but it also cleans much more effectively than the store brand solutions. Try it for yourself, and let me know what you think!

I just bought a beautiful area rug and a spot cleaner. Since we have three dogs, I’m going to need this formula sooner than I like to think about.

Isn’t it the worst?! I took mine to the vet and had every test done. I think he just eats too fast :)
