Historical Dramas On Netflix

By Heather

We have partnered with the Netflix as members of the #streamteam.

I think I’ve found my niche on Netflix. Lately I am drawn to historical dramas, whether they’re based on facts or complete fiction with a few loosely-based facts mixed in. These are some of my favorites so far – and I hope to find more new shows and movies in this category to watch next!

Historical Dramas on Netflix

Land Girls
Get a look at what the Women’s Land Army was like during World War II in England. This series is historical drama based on true stories and the story follows the land girls and community at Hoxley Estate. There are only three seasons and though it is unlikely, I am praying for a fourth because there were some storylines that the series 3 finale did not wrap up!

Historical Dramas on Netflix

Call the Midwife
This BBC series was adapted from the memoirs of Jennifer Worth giving viewers a peek at midwifery and family in 1950s East End London and the nurses helping the community at Nonnatus House. The series has continued beyond the memoirs and has turned into a historical fiction drama. I find this to be such a wonderful wholesome show – just be ready with the tissues.

Historical Dramas on Netflix

Medici: Masters of Florence
Set in 15th Century Florence (my favorite Italian city) this show outlines the most famous Medici Family with a focus on Cosimo who inherited the Bank of Medici from his father Giovanni who is murdered. It’s such an interesting show and I am anxiously awaiting season 2!

Historical Dramas on NetflixOutlander
I’m currently obsessing over when the season premier for Outlander will take place. While no longer streaming on Netflix, the previous two seasons are available on Netflix DVD. Get caught up on this exciting time-travel love story before the new season starts.

Historical Dramas on Netflix

The Crown
I am anxiously awaiting season 2 of The Crown. The world has always been obsessed with British Royalty, probably due to how private the details of their lives are. This Netflix Original gives us a behind the scenes look at life behind the curtain for Princess Elizabeth turned Queen and her royal family.

Hell on Wheels
I watched this one on loop earlier this year. Hell on Wheels is based in the post Civil War era when the first transcontinental railroad was built. I’ve never been one for a western show or film, but this one is different. It doesn’t hurt that the lead character is easy on the eyes, but the story is incredible and definitely worth a watch, especially if you ever dreamed about traveling back in time.

What are your favorite Historical Dramas, or what niche are you drawn to?

I tried to watch Call the Midwife and I couldn’t do it. I think it was because I was having some issues with my pregnancy and it just freaked me out. I’m going to attempt again! I always hear such amazing things!

Oooh! I love Call the Midwife. Hands down my favorite series in the past decade. Also loved The Crown and hoping the second season comes out soon. My husband and I watched this at night after the kids had gone to bed. I love this genre and hope to see more of it out on Netflix soon!

I have not heard of any of these shows. They look like good ones to watch but if I were to choose, I think it would be Land Girls and Call the Midwife that I would want to watch first.
