The kids have been using play-doh like it’s going out of style. I gave up on trying to keep it out of the house because I see how much they love it, and sometimes it’s nice to see them keep busy doing something other than watching television.
Even though the substance is relatively inexpensive, it’s still much cheaper to make it yourself. Not to mention way more fun. And as long as you keep these standard household ingredients around the house, you never have to worry about running out.
Play-Dough Recipe
- 1 cup water
- 1 tablespoon oil
- 1/2 cup salt
- 1 tablespoon cream of tartar
- food coloring
- 1 cup flour
Directions: Place the first five ingredients in a small saucepan and mix together until heated through. You do not have to worry about the salt dissolving. Once warm, pour into a separate mixing bowl and mix thoroughly with the flour until cool enough to handle.
This is the basic formula that I feel comes out the best. You can double or triple the recipe depending on how much you’re looking to make. Store in a zipped baggie to keep fresh for months.
I actually have everything on hand to make this for my 7 year old daughter. Bella loves playing with playdo. I have never made it myself I usually have had other people make it or I buy it but I think I’m going to this time and make it as one of the stocking stuffers.
I love that it stays fresh for so long. I want to play; can I come over?
My mom used to make a lot of homemade goodies when I was younger. Play dough was one of them. Glad to have a recipe now that is easy for kiddo.
So easy! I have heard of people making their own play dough, but I didn’t realize how easy it was until now!
Thank you for the recipe! I tried to make playdough recently but it came out all wrong. I will try your recipe next time!
I love making homemade play dough! It’s almost as therapeutic as playing with it!
I have tried making play dough and it was so easy. It is a great activity for little ones.
Oh, cool! And you can make all kinds of different colors this way! Great idea!
I have wanted to make a play dough at home, but can’t find cream of tartar anywhere (I live in Spain). Would it be ok to make it without cream of tartar?
Yes, but from what I’ve read it won’t last as long. Certainly worth a try.
I’ll have to try this with my toddler. He has play-doh now and LOVES it
