The kids have been using play-doh like it’s going out of style. I gave up on trying to keep it out of the house because I see how much they love it, and sometimes it’s nice to see them keep busy doing something other than watching television.
Even though the substance is relatively inexpensive, it’s still much cheaper to make it yourself. Not to mention way more fun. And as long as you keep these standard household ingredients around the house, you never have to worry about running out.
Play-Dough Recipe
- 1 cup water
- 1 tablespoon oil
- 1/2 cup salt
- 1 tablespoon cream of tartar
- food coloring
- 1 cup flour
Directions: Place the first five ingredients in a small saucepan and mix together until heated through. You do not have to worry about the salt dissolving. Once warm, pour into a separate mixing bowl and mix thoroughly with the flour until cool enough to handle.
This is the basic formula that I feel comes out the best. You can double or triple the recipe depending on how much you’re looking to make. Store in a zipped baggie to keep fresh for months.
I love playing with Playdoh. I even use it for therapy for some of my patients :P
I love playing with Playdoh even as an adult. It’s fun to make it yourself too. You can add scents to it too.
What a cool recipe. To be honest with you I never knew until a few years ago that you could make play dough. This sounds like so much fun, we are going to have to try it.
This stuff is great! So easy to make and lasts a good while my kids just love it!
My kids like it when we make play dough. They can play with it for hours.
My kids totally loved Play Doh when they were little and we still have the carpet stains to prove it! It would have been much more fun to make it ourselves!
Forget the expensive and fancy stuff, this would be much more fun to make! This is a great post for moms!
Awesome.. cream of tarter! I think I have all the ingredients I need to make this.
I have actually never made play dough in all my years as a mom. It seems easy enough so I need to try!
That is pretty much the same recipe I use. Super easy to make :)
