Most people have cell phones these days. So you probably know all of the headaches that go into buying a new phone. There are tons of choices and through-the-roof ridiculous prices unless you agree to enter into a 2-year contract for which there is a hefty fee if you cancel early. And that’s after the 40-minute wait. Yesterday, I had the easiest most headache-free experience buying a new smartphone for my mom with a cheap wireless plan. At Walmart. Who knew?
Walmart offers month-to-month service plans with unlimited use. One includes unlimited talk and text for $29.99 and the other includes talk, text and web for $39.99. That’s an amazing price – less than what my husband and I pay and we’re locked into the standard 2-year contract. The best part with Walmart Family Mobile is that there is no contract.
My parents had two cell phones at one time, but this past summer they converted one of the lines to a landline in their Jersey house and are now down to one cell phone. When they’re in Florida, all they have is the one cell phone. If she needs to go to the store, or if my dad is playing tennis and takes his phone, she has no way to contact anyone. My sister and I talk often about how we are not comfortable with her not having a phone in this day and age, so I have decided to gift her one.
Since I already have Christmas gifts covered for she and my dad, I have decided to give my mom the Concord phone along with 3 months of service. This is the lowest price rate plan I’ve ever heard of and I love that I can manage it online. If she decides to continue her service, she can do so at her leisure but if not, there are no penalties or costs to her.
The Concord was one of the cheaper phones at $49.99 and it looks very nice. You also have to purchase a starter package for $25 which contains the sim card so that it will work on the T-Mobile network.
I can’t wait to see her reaction when she opens her birthday present. I’m fairly positive that her immediate response will be to say that I spent too much, but she doesn’t even know. I can’t wait to fill her in! When my parents see how affordable this service is, I can see her and my dad both taking full advantage.

I like that there is no contract. Its hard to sign on the dotted line for 2 years so this is a great option.

I’m sure she will love it!

The fact that there is no contract is a plus in my book. I dislike signing up for two years with a company only to find out I am disatisfied with the service and then it costs me money to cancel the contract.

I’m on my daughter’s contract but as you said the contract and price are so high. I pay $40 a month. That includes unlimited texts and the web. It also includes the $10 insurance which I don’t mind paying. My last phone fell in the toilet so insurance is a good thing. LOL! I’m glad to know Walmart has these great phone deals. I learned a lot on your blog today :)
