DIY Cat Play Box

Our dog Buddy may be the most recent addition to our family, but our cats Winston and Spencer are the originals. We love them very much and even though they’re now considered seniors, they still have a lot of playfulness in them. Cat play is very different from dog play and our cats have never been content playing with a simple toy. They are all about the intrigue; they love the thrill of playing with the unseen object.

This is the cheapest DIY around, and I only needed one item at Target – packing tape. I always check out the pet section when I’m there and I found Meow Mix® Simple Servings™ in turkey and chicken flavor while I was there, cause I never miss an opportunity to spoil my kitties and they love getting wet cat food as a dinnertime treat.

Meow Mix Simple Servings are brand new. They come in convenient single serving mess-free cups and there are never any leftovers to worry about because it’s the perfect amount of food for one – and my cats find them to be delicious! Unlike the pouches we used to serve them (unless I use a spoon or a fork, I can’t get all of the food out), these are super easy to open and empty. Each cup contains real pieces of seafood or poultry, depending on the flavor. We found the following flavors in the cat food aisle: Tune & Salmon, Chicken & Turkey and Seafood Variety.

Their new play box will have them working up an appetite for their chicken & turkey dinner. The main item you’ll need is a medium-sized shipping box. Turn it on its side with the sides facing straight out. Simply tape three of the sides so that they stay sticking straight out. Tape both inside and out for maximum sturdiness.

On the fourth side of the box I first cut out a simple cat door before taping that side up along with the others. Then I turned the box upside down and cut a hole in what was the bottom and will become the top. Now I can dangle my cats’ favorite toys from the top of the box and watch them have fun playing! It doesn’t get any easier than that, and the cost to make it? Almost zero.

Currently Target has a Cartwheel Offer for 20% Off Meow Mix running now through November 15, 2017. 10/18 – 11/15. Also visit The Daily Break for more kitty fun. It’s the perfect time to treat your cats to the new Meow Mix Simple Servings.

What a simple diy! The fun thing about cats is that they are easily entertained. lol

I’m not sure who enjoys cardboard boxes more … the cat or the kid. I think adding to her box will make it even more enjoyable.

Our cats love boxes and Meow Mix! They usually eat the dry food, but we’ll have to try this new wet food as a special treat.

Thank you! I love to keep it simple and cheap and I like re-purposing the cardboard boxes before recycling :)

I can see my cats playing with this for hours. They are always finding toys my kids leave out. Legos seem to be a favorite.

I miss having a kitty around. Lately, I have been begging each time I see one that needs a home. If we had one, I would totally make this. The oldest child has cats at her Dads home, perhaps she can make this play box for her cats there!

Our shelters here are so overcrowded. It’s awful. I might just be adopting a third one soon!

Cool idea! I would be willing to bet my parents cat Bob would love a toy like this, as well as some Meow Mix.

I have two cats in my home. My younger cat would totally love a play box if I made her one!
