Around here, Sunday newspapers get delivered on Saturday. The idea being that people want a head start at reading the sale flyers for stores so that they can use the entire day on Sunday to shop. A few years ago, we stopped getting the Sunday paper because we found that we rarely ever read it. It was a waste of money, and our time and energy just having to wrap it up for recycling.
Once in a while I pick one up in the grocery store on a Sunday. Primarily for the coupon inserts. I only clip what I know I’ll use, and sometimes that only means one or two coupons. I’m starting to question if it’s really worth it. There are now a myriad of coupon websites where consumers can print the coupons that they need. It just seems like a big waste of paper and ink to me. Especially when we mostly read our news online these days.
Now that we have television, internet and radio as our main resources for news, is there really a need for the newspaper? And by the way, none of those other media leave ink on your fingers. The phone book is another great example. It’s much faster to google someone’s phone number than to haul out the big fat phonebook, and then you have to store it somewhere.
The one benefit I can still see is for local newspapers. Local news sources are lacking in that they don’t all have websites in which to report on local news and upcoming events. But I think it will eventually come to fruition.
