A couple of weeks ago, we took the kids to their very first theatrical production at the Arden Theatre Company. This is a very kid-friendly non-profit theatre located in the Old City section of Philadelphia. I was both surprised and delighted to see children helping out, as were my children. We found it to be a great introduction to theatre and my oldest was so enthralled with the performances. Even my two-and-a-half year old did pretty well.
We saw a production of Beauty and the Beast written by Charles Way and Directed by Whit MacLaughlin, it is a bold retelling of the classic fairy tale. Don’t expect to see Disney’s version. There were no fancy sets or costumes, but instead creative light manipulation and great acting. It forces you to hone in on the actors and focus on the story. It’s recommended for children 5 and older.
Meet two sisters: Cassandra, eager to experience life; and Belle, who is afraid of the world. After their father loses the family fortune, they leave London to start life anew. But nothing prepares them for what happens next. When Belle meets the Beast, she begins an adventure unlike any she could have imagined. From the team that created Arden’s Cinderella comes a bold new telling of this classic tale.
The actors had a brief Q&A session right after the play, and were also available to chat afterward in the lobby. The kids loved meeting the lead actress, and they were all very friendly. We had a wonderful evening and we definitely plan on returning to the Arden Theatre Company.
The Beauty and the Beast will be running through February 1st, 2015.
