Slow cooker dinners can be a lifesaver. While I truly enjoy cooking and don’t mind doing the work for a great meal, sometimes it’s nice to let someone else do the cooking. Or something else. I was up sick all night last night, so it was great to be able to toss dinner into the crock pot this morning and have dinner ready to eat by 5:30.
There are a gazillion recipes on the internet that involve your crock pot, a piece of meat and a sauce of some sort. Some recipes are a hit, and others fall flat. I was really excited to see the new Campbell’s Slow Cooker Sauces at Stop & Shop. Yum, all of the flavors sound delicious! I decided on Tavern Style Pot Roast.
I also picked up a bag of carrots, red-skin potatoes, onions and a top round sirloin that was on sale for only $6.00. Now that’s a bargain! Other than being completely convenient, the slow cooking process tenderizes meats so well that you can get away with using a lesser quality cut of meat without sacrificing on the quality or taste of the meal. The instructions on the sauce I purchased were for use with beef only, but I wanted a one-dish meal. This is how I made it.
1 1/2 lb. top round sirloin or chuck roast
3 medium potatoes
4 large carrots
1 /2 t celery salt
1 1/2 t parsley flakes
salt and pepper
1/2 cup water
Campbell’s Tavern Style Pot Roast Slow Cooker Sauce
Set the meat into the bottom of a slow cooker. Season with salt and pepper and about 1/2 teaspoon of celery salt.
Peel carrots and chop into roughly 3-inch pieces. Chop the onion into rings. Toss both over the meat in the crock pot.
Halve three medium-sized potatoes and then quarter each half so you’re left with 8 pieces per potato. Add the potatoes to the slow cooker pile.
Sprinkle parsley flakes over the mixture before pouring the Campbell’s Tavern Style Pot Roast Slow Cooker Sauce. I added a 1/2 cup of water around the edge to provide a little more liquid to help steam the potatoes. Set on low for approximately six hours and dinner is done.
This meal was absolutely delicious! You can’t beat a dinner that’s both easy and awesome. Because the sauce is so flavorful, you don’t really need to add a lot of spices.
This is the finished product. I love how the potatoes and veggies become soaked in that flavorful sauce.
Check with your local Stop & Shop or Giant stores to see if they will be offering in-store demonstrations on May 3rd. It’s a great opportunity to try out some new easy dinner options.
